What inspires me most about Malala Yousafzai is the courage she showed before the world even knew her name. As a young girl living under Taliban rule in Pakistan, she began writing anonymously for the BBC about her life, her fears, and her determination to continue her education. Her voice eventually became impossible to silence. After being shot by the Taliban for advocating for girls’ right to learn, Malala survived and went on to become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Yet what makes Malala remarkable to me is not simply that she became a symbol for girls’ education. She continued her own education while refusing to be confined by the expectations placed upon that symbol. Through her writing, advocacy, humor, interests, and willingness to speak openly about her life, she has shown that a young woman can be passionate about a cause without having to become a perfect poster child for it. This portrait celebrates not only Malala’s courage, but her individuality and her insistence on being fully human.
